Shady Garden Renovation Newport
This shady garden renovation Newport provided a challenge as the garden has two distinct areas. Most of the garden is in shade or part shade and other parts are in full sun. The plants selected for this garden had to tolerate both areas and also look good beside each other while providing screening along the sides of the property. New edging had to be installed to provide definition to the garden beds also stop the grass growing in.
The existing garden beds first had to be weeded and the old plants removed. Branches overhanging from the neighbouring properties had to be cut back before any work could be done on the garden. Some existing edges were defined by bricks and these had to be removed. When the clearing had been done Greenlife compost was added and dug into the existing soil in the garden beds. The compost improves the fertility of the soil and the ability of water to soak into the garden.
The next step was to start installing the edging. Sawn Sandstone Flagging was the material used. This was cut into rectangular peices and set into the ground on a sand / cement base. The gaps between the pieces were mortared together with a sand / cement mix.
When the edging had been finished the plants were planted.
The garden beds in front of the house are in shade most of the year, while the gardens along the driveway and the side boundary are in a lot of sun. The plants used in the shady areas were Cordylines, Bromilliads and Gardenias. These plants will grow and flower in shady areas and the Cordylines have colourful leaves that provide colour year round. The plants used to form privacy screens in the sunnier areas were Acmena smithii minor Cherry Surprise. The new growth starts as a beautiful Cherry red colour then fades to a dark green. These will grow to form hedges and provide privacy along the side boundaries. The red new growth will provide extra colour to the garden.
The above picture shows the Acmena’s prior to planting. The last job was to add the mulch to the garden beds. The mulch helps to prevent weeds from growing and stops moisture from being evaporated from the gardens soils.
The finished result is a beautiful garden that will provide flowers and colour in both the sunny and shady areas. The screening along the side boundaries will look good and provide privacy for the property owners. The Sandstone edging looks classy and is a great feature of the garden.
